Guided by the Kanangra Restoration Committee, established in 2001, three dedicated teams of volunteers work on the restoration of Kanangra's timber superstructure on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday at the Fleet's Rozelle Bay shipyard.  Kanangra volunteers are assisted by Sydney Heritage Fleet staff and other teams including especially engineers and metal workers.

The Kanangra teams include men and women with varied work experience who enjoy applying their skills and energy to bringing this iconic ferry back to life. In keeping with restoration principles, the Kanangra Restoration Committee aims to restore her as faithfully as possible. Original materials are cleaned, repaired and reused to the greatest possible extent and our volunteers relearn traditional ship building techniques. At the same time, we ensure that Kanangra meets contemporary maritime standards so that she can return to survey and safely carry passengers again. 

Until her placement on the Fleet's Sea Heritage Dock in April 2022, restoration work focussed on timber work including the aft and fore decks, the aft and bow wheelhouses and the ferry's 200+ windows.

Considerable work is now being devoted to removing polyurethane and concrete that was applied to lining the hull following an ultrasound hull survey conducted in 2002. Removal of that material will prepare the hull for replacement of the steel frames and steel plates.  

The Sydney Heritage Fleet is committed to restoring Kanangra to her 1960s splendour with the aim of having her sail under the Harbour Bridge on the Bridge's centenary in 2032. That will be the 120th anniversary of  Kanangra's  construction.
